I start my design process by sourcing my own photos with a theme in mind. Then I pencil some rough sketches on paper to capture the beginning of the motifs and design. I draw the images separately and go over them with dark ink.
I like to integrate white space in my motifs to create a fresh modern water color style. To create this effect I place watercolor paper over my sketch on Art-O-Graf light board and paint around the lines and leave thin white spaces on the paper to break up the sections.
This creates a kind of stencil like effect.
I can replicate the motifs and try different color ways quite easily. I then scan, scan, scan into Photoshop to clean up the motifs. I also incorporate mark-making and outlines utilizing iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil.
Watercolor + iPad mark-making = Vector ai.
Everything is then vectorized in Adobe Illustrator and arranged to create a repeating pattern design with a modern handpainted look.
